New Dog? Here's What You Actually Need

New Dog? Here's What You Actually Need

Getting a new dog is one of the best things in the world. It's also slightly chaotic - there's so much advice, so many products, and it's hard to know what you actually need versus what's just nice to have. Here's an honest breakdown.

The Essentials - Day One

A Harness

A harness is safer than a collar for walks. It distributes pressure across the chest rather than the neck, which matters especially for puppies whose tracheas are still developing, and for any dog that pulls. Get this before anything else.

For a new dog, a standard back-clip padded harness is ideal. It's easy to put on, comfortable, and doesn't require any training to use effectively. Our corduroy harnesses (Brownie, Pistachio, Cream Dream, Lila) are a great starting point - soft, adjustable, and beautiful.

A Collar with a Name Tag

Even if you use a harness for walks, your dog should wear a collar with an ID tag at all times. This is the fastest way to get a lost dog home. Put their name and your phone number on it.

A Leash

150-170cm is the standard length for daily walks. It gives your dog room to sniff and explore without giving them so much slack that you lose control. Our leashes pair perfectly with their matching harnesses and collars.

Nice to Have - Week One

  • A poop bag holder that clips to the leash
  • A bandana - our tie-on bandanas are easy to put on and take off
  • A treat pouch for training walks

Or Get Everything in One Set

The easiest option for new dog owners is a matching set - harness, collar, leash and poop bag holder all in one. Everything coordinates, everything fits, and you're set for day one.
