How to Keep Your Dog Cool in Summer

How to Keep Your Dog Cool in Summer

Dogs don't sweat the way humans do. They release heat primarily through panting and through the pads of their feet - which makes summer significantly harder on them than on us. Here's how to keep your dog safe and comfortable when temperatures rise.

Walk at the Right Times

Avoid walking between 11am and 4pm in summer. The pavement absorbs heat and can burn your dog's paw pads badly - if you can't hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it's too hot for your dog to walk on. Early morning and evening walks are much safer and more comfortable for everyone.

Check the Pavement Temperature

Place the back of your hand flat on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it's too hot to hold there comfortably, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Grass and shaded paths are always cooler options.

Watch for Signs of Overheating

Know the signs of heatstroke in dogs:

  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Bright red gums
  • Lethargy or stumbling
  • Vomiting
  • Collapse

If you see these signs, move your dog to a cool area immediately, offer water, wet their paws and neck with cool (not cold) water, and get to a vet fast. Heatstroke is a genuine emergency.

Hydration is Everything

Always carry water on summer walks. Dogs should drink regularly - offer water every 15-20 minutes during exercise in hot weather. A collapsible bowl takes up almost no space in a bag.

Choose the Right Harness for Summer

Heavy padded harnesses can trap heat. In summer, lighter and more breathable options work better. Our neoprene harnesses are a great summer choice - the material is naturally breathable and dries fast after a swim or a cool-down rinse. The crochet Boho Chic harness is also excellent for hot weather - lightweight, open weave, and very comfortable in heat.

Water Dogs

If your dog loves water, summer is their season. Let them paddle, swim, and splash - it's one of the best ways to keep their temperature down. Our water-resistant neoprene sets (Wave Rider, Wild Paws, Rainbow Rush) are made for exactly this - they dry fast, don't absorb water, and wipe clean in seconds.
